We all love to see it when one of our own wows on the big stage and Dermot Kennedy is one of Ireland’s talented stars who has seen an incredible rise to fame recent years.

The 31-year-old from Rathcoole in Co. Dublin has been busking since the age of 17, and unlike many of others before him, has managed to stay true to his roots even as his star has continued to rise.

Just before Christmas last year, Dublin Town even had to set up protective bollards along Grafton Street when he performed a memorable set on the balcony of the iconic Bewley’s café to a crowd of thousands.

But it’s questionable that he’ll be able to continue street performances for much longer after his latest TV appearance in the States blew viewers of the Jimmy Fallon Show away.

Early on Monday afternoon, Dermot posted a short clip of his warm up with his backing vocalists in a green room.

The musicians were singing the chorus of Dermot’s latest single One Life from his newest album Sonder and Dermot invited followers to tune in to watch the performance in full on America’s favourite late-night presenter Jimmy Fallon’s show.

Each programme nets about 1.5million viewers, while the TV personality boasts some 30million followers on social media.

So, when Jimmy Fallon told the audience to ‘please welcome Dermot Kennedy…’ no doubt the pressure was on, but Dermot pulled it out of the bag and absolutely blew the audience away. The shouts, screams and applause continued way after his performance.

Dermot shared a snippet of the performance, with a flurry of congratulations flooding into the comments and the likes of YouTube star Jeremy Lynch and our own Captain Fantastic Robbie Keane all adding to their own best wishes.

One follower said: ‘From the streets of Ireland to the top of the world… Your success and recognition will be undeniable. Keep climbing DK’ while another admirer said ‘Absolute beast, been listening from the start and it just keeps getting better. Keep working hard brother we all love you’.

Dermot has been playing music since around the age of 14, but only started to take it seriously once he started busking at the age of 17. He was spotted by Oscar winner Glen Hansard and invited to open for him on tour.

Since then, Dermot has gone on to perform on the streets of Dublin, New York, Boston to name but a few of the cities where he has staged a show, while he has also performed at Coachella and Lollapalooza.

Following the success of his latest screen appearance, it’s looking likely he’s only going to keep attracting more and more fans to his shows.
