- Thickened and discolored nail plates
- Cuticles and nail folds that may separate from the nail plate

Causes
– Causes include:
- Acute paronychia : It is caused by Staphylococci infection, which can be from fingernail biting, or any other trauma or injury to the nail.
- Chronic paronychia: It is caused by Candida yeast; Sometimes caused by bacteria.
– The risk factors include:
- Occupation such as dishwasher, bartender, housekeeper
- Diabetes
- HIV infection
- Excessive moisture
- Certain medications
