When it comes to girlbands, country music’s The Dixie Chicks are up there with the best of them and now after years away from the big stage music lovers can rejoice as they’re back.
The Chicks are going on a 37-date tour over the summer with an Irish date included in the billing. The shows will kick off on 20 June in Olso, Norway, before heading to the UK and Europe.
Singing along to hits like Cowboy Take Me Away and Landslide with our pals in an arena? Count us in! Adding to the excitement, Maren Morris will also be joining them on several of the tour dates.
Speaking as the tour was announced, The Chicks said: ‘This last year on the road has been a whirlwind for us, but it’s time to bring the party to the UK and Europe. We can’t wait to see everyone and play for all our fans across the pond – it’s been a long time coming, and we can’t wait to get back!’
The run of shows will be The Chicks’ first dates in the UK for seven years and they’re due to play Dublin’s 3Arena on June 30. Other UK stops include Cardiff on June 27, Glasgow on June 28, Birmingham on July 2 and Manchester on July 4.
After nearly 14 years, The Chicks released their fifth studio album GASLIGHTER to rave reviews in July 2020. The 12-track record was co-produced by award-winning singer-songwriter, producer, and close friend of the band Jack Antonoff who has also worked with Taylor Swift.
Since they hit the big time as The Dixie Chicks, the band have sold more than 30.5 million albums making them members of an elite group of artists and the only female group to achieve multiple ‘diamond’ selling (ten million copies) releases and won 13 Grammy awards.
While the band will undoubtedly come back to the stage with many of their hit songs, they will be doing so under the new shorter name of The Chicks. They made the decision to adjust their band name in 2020 because of the connotations it had with slavery.
The word ‘Dixie’ was used to describe the Confederate US states that upheld slavery. The band revealed their new name along with a song called March March.
Celebrating the exciting news on social media on Valentine’s Day, the Chicks wrote: ‘Thank you to all our fans for making last Summer so fun! It’s time to get the party going again! We can’t wait to see everyone!’
Maren Morris was also delighted to share the news as she posted the list of shows. ‘Europe/UK/Canada, I’ll be opening for my heroes @thechicks (!!!) later this year. Tickets on sale Friday at 10am local,’ she added in the caption.
The singer is the voice behind hits including The Bones, The Middle and My Church. If you’re ready to get your dancing boots on then tickets for the Europe & UK dates go on sale on Friday, 17 February at 10am local.
